![]() Hangouts for iOS doesn't handle SMS yet, so the Google Voice app must still be used for texting to and from your Google Voice number without "fake numbers" that confuse others. (You'll want to uncheck your phone's real number as a forwarding device in Google Voice to prevent both it and Hangouts on the phone from ringing at the same time.) I'm on Wi-Fi most of the time so Hangouts will use that, and my understanding is that on cellular it uses about 1MB per minute for voice much more for video, of course, which I have no interest in. Now, when someone calls my Google Voice number, Hangouts rings on both my computer and phone. The same "Google Chat" forwarding phone option applies to Hangouts in both Chrome and iOS. I've only seen one post on Reddit by /u/gotlactose on the subject. In October, however, Google added the same inbound and outbound functionality to the Hangouts app for iOS (not yet for Android, much to that platform's users' dismay). Vonage's iOS app offers free outbound calls, and can send out your Google Voice number as Caller ID, but can't receive calls to the number (not for free, at least). Yes, VoIP solutions linked to Google Voice like Talkatone and GV Mobile exist, but they will go away in May 2014. This still meant, however, that I used minutes while on my iPhone. My $30 T-Mobile unlimited-data prepaid plan only provides 100 minutes a month, so I prefer to use the Hangouts extension in Chrome to make and receive calls for free on my computer. In the US, you can also receive calls on Hangouts to your Google Voice number for free, as "Google Chat" appears in Google Voice's options as a forwarding phone. ![]() ![]() It even sends your Google Voice number as the Caller ID. Google Hangouts, however, does offer free calls to US and Canadian phone numbers. We Google Voice users know that it is not if you use the Google Voice app to make and receive calls on your cell phone, it still uses your phone's voice network and minutes. A common misconception is that Google Voice is VoIP. ![]()
